There was once a time, several centuries ago, that the world at large thought we were the centre of the Universe. That the earth was at the focus and everything else moved around us. Anybody who held or as much as voiced an opinion at any variance from this ran the risk of being burnt at stake and declared a heretic by the church. The Establishment was very clear that what it ordained was a fact that could not be contested. And along came Galileo, one fine morning and announced that Earth was NOT the centre of the Universe. He risked everything and dared everyone. He stood up to the conviction that the earth was merely one of the many heavenly bodies that moved around the sun. Today, we know he was correct.
When we were young children, we often heard the refrain from our parents, work hard now, and when you grow up you will have a worry free and satisfying life. Study hard now, so you may find the work you can earn your living by. Then you will be happy.
Well. it is time to turn this picture of the human Universe around its own tail. Work- suffer, work- earn, be happy needs to be rethought and re-jigged. Modern research has proven beyond doubt that man is not merely a social animal striving for the end point of happiness through his life but that he is a being that thrives on a simple emotion. Happiness! The happier you are, the more you do. the more you do what makes you happy, the more you get good at it. the better you do it. And easier. the happier you get! QED. Hence proved!
And happiness is an attitude that is as easy to cultivate as any other habit. Excellence is a habit that is as easy to build as any other action. And action is really a thought- manifested in the real world. It all starts in your head, and mine. And his. And hers. And we are ready for it.
Happiness is not the end point of our effort but the origin. Happiness is not the culmination of living but the fabric of life. We need to weave each thread, carefully and intricately into our everyday living lest we find gaping holes that threaten our life's continuity and completeness.
Happy does more and does so more effectively, more efficiently than any other attitude.
Let us allow our children to be happy. let us allow ourselves to be complete. Let Joy take over!
